The closing of the Mexican border throughout the Big Bend region post September 11, 2001 created great disruption for families living on both sides of the river. Voices From Both Sides is a non-political effort to raise awareness of these border issues through music and cultural exchanges.
A cross-border musical event is held at Lajitas, Texas in early May to highlight the diversity yet commonality of the Rio Grande region.
